Cisco New Media Summit II/A post on the word FREE

Cisco’s John Earnhardt left me a comment on my original Cisco New Media Summit post about the word “free.”

Instead of a sarcastic italicized paragraph on the word “free” what I should’ve done was give proper credit to Cisco for hosting the event (rather than the quick “thanks”). I also completely forgot to give credit to BPCC also for hosting the event.

When I registered for the event I had my credit card information ready because it was an event I really wanted to go to. And when it didn’t take me to a purchase page, I couldn’t believe that it would not cost me anything to attend. There are events I wouldn’t pay not even $10 for, but considering their high-caliber speaker lineup, there was definitely value that I wouldn’t mind paying for (please don’t get any ideas…I looooove FREE).

To get the point further across, the Cisco New Media Summit was held the same day as Launch Silicon Valley at the Microsoft Campus in Mountain View. It was an event that would’ve cost me $125 to attend (I think that was the price, I can’t remember anymore and too lazy to look it up) which isn’t really a big deal, but considering you’d be watching demos of start ups (which, by the way, I loooove doing), it was a little harder to justify the cost. I just think it’s not something I should have to pay for. (Since when did we have to pay for demos?)

Thank you again to Cisco and BPCC for hosting this event. Looking forward to next year and hoping that it will still be FREE.
